About Amy AMY’S PRACTICE BEGAN IN 1998 AND RECENTLY FOUND NEW POSSIBILITY AND FREEDOM. THROUGH A SERIES OF CLASSES AND A SPECIAL WORKSHOP AT MANTRA YOGA STUDIO (DANVERS, MA), SHE WAS INTRODUCED TO DAVID MAGONE’S PRANAVAYU YOGA. WHAT SHE FOUND IN PRANAVAYU—A CONTEMPORARY, AMERICAN APPROACH TO VINYASA FLOW YOGA THAT FOCUSES AS MUCH ON CHALLENGING THE YOGI TO FIND NEW DEPTH IN EACH POSE AS ON QUESTIONING UNDEREXAMINED ASPECTS OF YOGIC THOUGHT AND PHILOSOPHY—EMPOWERED HER PRACTICE TO MOVE BEYOND THE PERSONAL. AMY SOUGHT NEW WAYS TO CONNECT WITH THE WORLD AROUND HER AND TO LEARN, GROW, AND EMBRACE THE CHALLENGES THAT ARE INTEGRAL TO A PRANAVAYU-INSPIRED PRACTICE. OPPORTUNITY PRESENTED ITSELF WITH PRANAVAYU TEACHER TRAINING (200 HR RYT, 2014), AND AMY WAS EXCITED TO DIVE MORE INTIMATELY INTO HER PRACTICE WHILE SHARING IT WITH OTHERS IN A POWERFUL AND EMPOWERING WAY. SOMETHING “CLICKED” IN A BIG WAY. THOUGH HER PRACTICE FELT SOLID AND FOCUSED FOR SIXTEEN YEARS, IT WAS THROUGH TEACHER TRAINING THAT AMY LEARNED THE VALUES OF CONNECTING BREATH WITH MOVEMENT AND OF LEAVING HER EGO OFF THE MAT. WHILE AMY USED TO THINK THAT “CHALLENGING HERSELF” ALWAYS MEANT PURSUING EACH INVERSION, ARM BALANCE, AND “BAD-ASS YOGI MOVE” TO ITS FULLEST EXPRESSION, RECOVERING FROM A RECENT INJURY REMINDED HER THAT HUMILITY AND OPENNESS TO HER PRACTICE, PURSUING EVEN THE MOST BASIC POSES WITH INTENTION AND LOVE, AND CONNECTING—BOTH INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY—PRESENT THE KINDS OF CHALLENGE THAT ROOT HER IN HER YOGA AND ALLOW HER TO BE JOYFUL, POWERFUL, PEACEFUL, AND OPEN.
